President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has revealed that 78% of the beneficiaries of Nigeria’s ₦330 billion social protection funds are based in the northern region of the country.
Tinubu made the disclosure while speaking on his administration’s efforts to tackle poverty and improve social welfare across the nation. He noted that the initiative, implemented through various cash transfer and empowerment schemes, has provided critical support to vulnerable households, especially in states struggling with high poverty rates and insecurity.
“Our investment in social protection is designed to lift millions out of poverty. The fact that the majority of the beneficiaries are in the North reflects both the scale of need and our commitment to balanced national development,” the President said.
The social protection funds, launched as part of Tinubu’s Renewed Hope Agenda, cover conditional cash transfers, school feeding programs, and small business support grants.
However, critics argue that the heavy concentration of beneficiaries in one region raises questions about equitable distribution and the need to ensure transparency in targeting vulnerable groups nationwide.
Analysts note that while the disbursement has brought relief to many, long-term solutions will require creating jobs, improving security, and strengthening education and healthcare access.
