Court instructs NMA to examine if Nnamdi Kanu is fit to face trial

Court Orders NMA To Determine Nnamdi Kanu’s Fitness To Stand Trial

The Federal High Court has directed the Nigerian Medical Association (NMA) to carry out a comprehensive medical examination on the detained leader of the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB), Nnamdi Kanu, to ascertain whether he is fit to stand trial.

The ruling came after Kanu’s legal team raised fresh concerns about his deteriorating health and urged the court to allow an independent medical evaluation. The defence argued that his condition may prevent him from fully participating in his trial.

In response, the presiding judge ordered the NMA to assign a team of qualified doctors to conduct the examination and submit an official report directly to the court. The move is aimed at ensuring transparency and removing doubts about bias in earlier medical assessments.

The case against Kanu, who faces charges including terrorism and treasonable felony, has been ongoing since his re-arrest in 2021. His health status has remained a point of contention, with his lawyers repeatedly seeking improved medical care for him.

The court adjourned further proceedings pending the submission of the NMA’s report, which will determine the next steps in the trial process.
