Oshiomhole Warns Jonathan Against Contesting 2027 Presidential Election

Abuja, Nigeria — October 2, 2025

As political conversations ahead of the 2027 presidential election continue to heat up, former APC National Chairman and current senator, Adams Oshiomhole, has advised former President Goodluck Jonathan not to give in to pressure to return to the race.

Speaking during an interview with journalists in Abuja, Oshiomhole cautioned that Jonathan’s potential return might “not be helpful” to his legacy or the country’s political stability.

“There Are Issues That May Not Be Helpful to Him”

Oshiomhole said while Jonathan remains respected across the country and Africa, he should carefully consider the implications of joining the 2027 contest.

“There are other issues that may not be helpful to him,” Oshiomhole stated, noting that Jonathan has already written his name in history and should avoid being drawn into the current political tension.

Renewed Pressure on Jonathan

In recent weeks, several political groups and youth coalitions have reportedly been urging Jonathan to join the 2027 race, arguing that his experience and reputation for peace make him a unifying figure in a deeply divided country.

However, analysts believe the pressure is politically motivated, as various factions within and outside the ruling party see Jonathan as a potential compromise candidate.

Political Landscape Ahead of 2027

The race for 2027 is already shaping up to be highly competitive, with talks of possible alliances, realignments, and new movements emerging across Nigeria’s political space.

Jonathan has yet to make any public declaration about his intentions, maintaining a low political profile since leaving office in 2015.

A Legacy at Stake

Oshiomhole emphasized that Jonathan’s global reputation as a peaceful leader — particularly his historic concession of defeat in 2015 — should not be tainted by another political battle.

“He left office with dignity. That should not be compromised,” Oshiomhole added.

For now, all eyes remain on Jonathan as Nigerians watch whether he will yield to pressure — or preserve his legacy as one of the country’s most respected democratic figures.
