⸻ 🇳🇬 Tinubu Govt Orders Vice-Chancellors To Enforce ‘No Work, No Pay’ Policy Against Striking Lecturers

Abuja, Nigeria — October 6, 2025

The Federal Government has directed all Vice-Chancellors of public universities across Nigeria to strictly implement the ‘No Work, No Pay’ policy against lecturers currently on strike.

According to a circular issued by the Federal Ministry of Education, the order is part of the government’s effort to “restore academic stability and discourage disruptions in the nation’s university system.”

A senior official who confirmed the directive said:

“The Ministry has made it clear that any academic staff who refuses to resume work will not be entitled to salaries for the period of the strike. This aligns with existing labor laws and government policy.”

🎓 University Reactions

Some Vice-Chancellors have reportedly begun compiling lists of lecturers absent from duty, while others have called for dialogue to prevent escalation.

Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) leaders, however, have condemned the order, describing it as “an act of intimidation rather than negotiation.”

“You can’t starve lecturers and expect quality education. The government should focus on fulfilling its agreements, not punishment,” one ASUU source stated.

⚖️ Background

The ‘No Work, No Pay’ principle, first enforced under previous administrations, remains a controversial policy in Nigeria’s education sector. Critics argue that it worsens tension between the government and lecturers, while supporters believe it’s necessary to maintain discipline and accountability.

As discussions continue, the stand-off between the Federal Government and the academic community could once again determine the fate of millions of Nigerian students.
