Vehicles to Pay Between ₦500 and ₦1000 as New Revenue Policy Takes Effect
The Federal Government under President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has introduced a new entry toll system at the Moshood Abiola National Stadium, Abuja, as part of a broader initiative to boost internally generated revenue (IGR) and improve facility maintenance.
According to officials overseeing the stadium’s operations, the new directive took effect immediately, with security personnel and toll attendants stationed at all vehicle access points.
💰 New Toll Rates
Under the new policy:
- Cars/SUVs: ₦500
- Commercial vehicles: ₦700
- Trucks & heavy-duty vehicles: ₦1000
- Motorcycles & tricycles: No access allowed inside the facility
Officials say the fees will be used to maintain internal road networks, drainage systems, parking lots, and security infrastructure.
🏟️ Why the Toll Was Introduced
Sources within the Ministry of Sports & Youth Development say the toll is aimed at:
- Generating stable revenue for stadium maintenance
- Controlling vehicle traffic inside the sports complex
- Reducing misuse of the stadium grounds by non-sporting visitors
- Enhancing security within the premises
A senior staff member noted that the stadium has been bearing high maintenance costs with “little to no statutory funding,” prompting the need for alternative income channels.
🚗 Mixed Reactions From the Public
The decision has sparked a wave of mixed reactions:
Supporters argue:
- The stadium needs consistent funding to prevent deterioration.
- The toll will discourage unnecessary movement within the premises.
- The revenue will allow better sports facility upgrades.
Critics argue:
- The stadium is a public asset and should remain freely accessible.
- The fee is too high for Nigerians already facing economic hardship.
- The government may be commercializing public spaces excessively.
Several motorists complained about long queues at the toll points on the first day of enforcement.
👮 Security & Compliance
Security agencies have been instructed to enforce compliance, and vehicles without proof of payment will not be allowed into the premises.
Stadium authorities also warned against illegal parking outside the gates to avoid congestion on nearby highways.
🔎 What Happens Next?
The Ministry plans to review the policy after 90 days, taking into consideration:
- Public feedback
- Revenue performance
- Traffic flow
- Impact on stadium operations
If successful, similar toll systems may be introduced in other major federal sports facilities across the country.
