MTN’s Dabengwa data centre in Lagos awarded Tier-III Constructed Facility status

MTN Nigeria has announced that its Dabengwa data centre in Lagos has been awarded Tier-III Certification for Constructed Facility by the Uptime Institute, marking a key step in the company’s drive to strengthen cloud and digital infrastructure in Nigeria.

Opened in July as the first phase of a larger build, the facility is a prefabricated modular site assembled from 96 containerised modules, and delivers an initial 4.5 MW of IT capacity while being designed for future expansion. The centre incorporates AI-enabled energy optimisation and hybrid-cloud features targeted at enterprise customers.

A Tier-III constructed certification means the site is concurrently maintainable and built with redundant distribution paths for power and cooling so routine maintenance can occur without interrupting operations; Tier-III facilities are expected to offer about 99.982% availability (roughly 1.6 hours of downtime per year).

MTN’s leadership framed the certification as validation of the company’s investment in resilient infrastructure and its commitment to supporting Nigeria’s fast-growing digital economy. Company statements and industry coverage note that the data centre, named after Sifiso Dabengwa, sits within MTN’s broader plans to scale capacity to around 9 MW across phases and to support AI and cloud-native workloads.
